Some things to consider when purchasing personal lines insurance:
Home:
- Flood insurance is only written through the National Flood Insurance Program of the federal government. It is excluded from most homeowners policies
- Does your current homeowner’s policy cover mine subsidence and earth movement?
- If you have casual employees, such as cleaning staff and/or baby sitters do you have a workers compensation policy?
- Are your valuables such as paintings, jewelry and sculptures properly appraised and insured and included in your current homeowner’s policy?
- Is your home correctly valued and appraised? Homes should be insured for replacement cost not actual cash value, thus most homes are underinsured.
Auto:
- Comprehensive coverage doesn’t mean complete coverage. While comprehensive coverage may sound like coverage that will cover you in every situation, this is certainly not the case. Comprehensive coverage simply means you are covered in scenarios other than collisions. Theft, flooding, vandalism, and fire damage are examples of when comprehensive coverage will help you.
- The higher your deductible the better. If you believe you are a good driver, a high deductible may be a good choice for you. A deductible is what you have to pay out of pocket in case of an accident before the auto insurance kicks in. It’s best to choose the highest deductible you believe you can afford at any given time. Doing so will greatly reduce your premium.

Valuables:
- Are your valuables such as paintings, jewelry and sculptures properly appraised for insurance purposes?
- The best way to insure your jewelry is by adding a schedule of items to your homeowners policy
- Many times, the stone (diamond, for example) is just lost from the setting of the item of jewelry. This type of loss would be covered if the item was listed on a schedule. It would NOT be covered by the basic policy since “lost” is not a covered peril.
- Insurance companies may require an appraisal or a bill of sale to verify the amount of insurance
